OULTON PARK THE VENUE FOR GT GOLF

After setting a strong pace in the early stages of the Castle Combe round of the British GT Championship, the Team GulfAir Golf GTI heads for Oulton Park in Cheshire this weekend (12/13 Jul) with hopes high for a good result.

The Golf, driven by Steven Wood and Stuart Scott ran rings around many of its GTC class rivals at Combe to set the third-quickest race lap time, and at the halfway stage in the race was leading it's class and running fifth overall. The chance of a top three finish came to an abrupt end with five minutes to go with a gearbox problem.

Now, with an extensively reworked gearbox, the Golf - which is backed by Gulf Air, ART and Cambridge Business Travel - should prove a lot more reliable.

"We've looked at a lot of options for the gearbox," said Wood, "but in the end rebuilding the existing unit has proved to be the best alternative. We will be paying careful attention to the 'box at Oulton, trying not to over-stretch things, and hopefully we can enjoy a good, competitive outing."

Backed by Gulf Air, ART and Cambridge Business Travel, the Golf has made history this season by becoming the first-ever front-wheel-drive contender in the British Sportscar Championship.
