It's been an interesting 2003 what with the building of the new Golf, running and winning in the EERC and then being asked to run in the British GT cup alongside Ferraris, Porsches, Lotuses and Morgans.
Steve and Stuart relished the idea and raced twice at Knockhill and were very unlucky not to get a podium with a 4th and 5th. From there they moved onto Silverstone but the car unluckily caught on fire after the turbo blew and only after 8 laps. Castle Combe saw a 7th with the bigger turbo'd car out qualifying the Ferrari by nearly half a second. A rebuilt gear box took the Golf to an excellent 4th at Oulton Park amongst a bigger field.
The team then invested in a sequential gear box for Rockingham. Steve started the race really well and held off the Morgan easily but the gearbox let go just after the pit stop. The gear box let go again at Spa which was a terrible disappointment to the team. Gremlins were again to hit at Brands with them finishing the race with no clutch and underpowered.
2004 should see Steve and Stuart in a new car - a Porsche 911 GT3 cup car and hopefully with a team that knows how to look after and get the best out of it. This is going to be a great asset and they should get some impressive results in the GT Cup next year.
They had their first run out in the car at Silverstone last Friday and it came as a complete surprise to Steve. Stuart had schemed to get him to the track (with his race gear hidden in the back of the car).
Not that it is good bye to the Golf. They have decided to keep it and
it will be making an appearance or two next year. What was annoying
was that the problem was eventually traced to faulty fuel pumps and
now the car is running perfectly.
